Essential Winter Prep for Your Vehicle

Be prepared for the unexpected!

By following these winter vehicle preparation tips, you can help ensure that your car is ready for whatever winter throws your way:

Top off fluids.  Check your coolant, antifreeze, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid levels and top them off if necessary.

Keep your gas tank full. This will help prevent your fuel line from freezing.

Check your tires.  Make sure your tires are properly inflated and that the tread is still good. Winter tires are a good investment if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow, as they provide better traction in icy conditions.

Check your wiper blades.  Wiper blades wear out over time, and they can become even less effective in cold weather. Replace your wiper blades with winter-specific blades that are designed to clear snow and ice.

Park your car in a garage or under a covered area if possible. This will help protect it from the snow and ice.

Start your car and let it warm up for a few minutes before driving in cold weather. This will help loosen up the engine oil and make it easier for your car to start.

Drive slowly and carefully in winter weather conditions. It takes longer to stop on snow and ice, so be sure to give yourself plenty of extra space.

Pack an emergency kit.  An emergency kit is essential for any time of year, but it's especially important in winter. Your kit should include things like a blanket, jumper cables, a flashlight, a first-aid kit and some non-perishable food and water.

Even if you do everything you can to prepare your car for winter, there's always a chance that you'll get stuck in bad weather. If you do, stay calm and don't try to drive through it. Call for help and wait for the storm to pass.
