Dashboard Warning Light Series: Oil Pressure Warning

If you hear clunking, grinding, knocking, ticking and/or whining noises coming from your engine, don’t ignore them.  There may be a simple reason (and solution) for this unnerving soundtrack, but one that should be addressed quickly.

In addition to these tell-tale sounds, seeing your oil pressure warning light illuminate on your car’s dashboard is an obvious indicator that something isn’t quite right with your engine’s oil pressure.

There are a few things that can cause the oil pressure warning light to come on. One possibility is that the oil level is low. If the oil level is low, the oil pump will not be able to circulate enough oil throughout the engine, which will cause the oil pressure to drop and the engine will not be able to properly lubricate itself, which can lead to wear and tear on the engine components.

Another possibility is that the oil is dirty or contaminated. Dirty or contaminated oil can't lubricate the engine properly, which can also lead to low oil pressure.
Other oil pressure issues could result from using a lower or higher oil viscosity than recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer, an internal oil leak or damaged/clogged oil pump.

Here are some tips to help prevent the oil pressure warning light from coming on:
Get your oil changed regularly according to your vehicle’s manufacturer             recommendations.
Use the correct type of oil for your car.
Have the oil level checked in between oil change services.
Have the oil level checked before road trips.
