The low washer fluid or lamp out warning lights on your car’s dashboard can be two of the most innocuous warnings…unless you’re driving at night. Or, during rainy or snowy conditions. Or, braking at a stop sign. Or, turning left. Okay, maybe these warnings should be taken seriously.
If you see a washer fluid dashboard warning light on your car or notice that the washer fluid does not spray as far or as hard as it used to, it means that your washer fluid reservoir is low. This light is important because it helps to ensure that you have enough washer fluid to clear your windshield of dirt, debris, and water, especially during the winter months when you are likely to use more washer fluid.
Most cars use between one and two quarts of washer fluid per year. It’s important to use washer fluid that is specifically designed for cars, as some household washer fluids contain alcohol, which can damage the rubber seals in your washer fluid system.
If you see a lamp out dashboard warning light on your car, it means that one or more of your car’s exterior lights are not working. Exterior lights include your headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals and fog lights. This is important for safety, as it allows other drivers to see your car at night and in other low-visibility conditions. A missing taillight can also be a reason for a warning, or possibly even a citation, from a police officer.
The main symptom of a lamp out is the lamp out warning light on your dashboard. However, you or your passenger may also notice that one or more of your car's exterior lights are not working properly. For example, your taillights may be dim or one of your headlights may be out (PADIDDLE!), or you may have a fast-blinking turn signal.
Here are some tips for keeping the lights on, longer:
• Regularly check your car’s exterior lights, especially if you notice a change in your visibility or a fast-blinking turn signal.
• Use high quality light bulbs.
• Replace your car's exterior lights according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
