The check engine light monitors variables like engine speed, fuel mixture and ignition timing. When the system detects a problem it can’t correct on its own, it responds by lighting up the warning symbol.
The check engine light is red or amber and typically features the outline of an engine and the words "service engine soon", or simply "check engine". Some owner’s manuals refer to it as the check engine light (CEL) or malfunction indicator light (MIL).
And while it’s normal for the check engine light to illuminate when the car is first started, it should disappear as soon as the vehicle is running. Whether or not the warning light is steady or blinking is also a factor. A steady light generally indicates a non-emergency while a blinking light is meant to get your attention with a more serious problem.
Try stopping/starting your vehicle three times consecutively in an attempt to reset the trouble codes. Also, check that your gas cap is on tight, especially if you recently refueled. If the check engine light remains on, the system is detecting an issue. If you’re on the road and the warning light turns on, you don’t usually need to pull over immediately. However, you should make plans to have an Engine Diagnostic Service performed sooner than later.
