When your anti-lock braking system (ABS) light comes on, rest
assured that your brakes are still working. But, you may be at risk of having
your wheels lock up in certain hazardous situations.
Your
anti-lock braking system is what keeps your wheels from locking up when you
suddenly apply the brakes. To prevent the wheels from locking, the ABS quickly
pumps your brakes; you will feel a rapid pulsing against your foot when this
happens. Drivers need anti-locking brakes to prevent hydroplaning when
roads are wet and skidding when roads are icy.
There may be an easy
fix to this situation. First, check to
make sure the ABS system wasn’t accidently turned off without realizing
it. Review
your owners’ manual to see how to turn the ABS on and off. Second, check whether or not the emergency
brake is on. Release the brake and check
to see if the light turns off.
If
an accidental turn off isn’t the reason for the warning light, it could be one
of the following situations:
At Jiffy Lube, we’re experts at keeping your vehicle running smoothly with services and diagnostics performed at Jiffy Lube Idaho.
- Low brake fluid. If you have your brake fluid checked and filled but the brake warning light comes on again in a few days, check the fluid level again. If it is low, you may have a leak. Keep in mind that low brake fluid levels can cause your brakes to fail.
- Loss of hydraulic pressure. If the warning light comes on when you apply the brakes, this is likely the case.
