Warning lights are normally a real downer. Nobody likes seeing a warning light turn on while driving. They can be a real headache to try to understand and diagnose. Here’s another quick guide to help walk you through the meaning for some of the most common warning lights and what you should do next to remedy the situation.
What it means: something in your vehicle’s system is not working properly. Common culprits are the gas cap, fuel or emission controls, or the ignition system.
Next steps: first tighten your gas cap. If the light remains on, seek professional help to help diagnose the source of your check engine light problem.
What it means: engine is overheating.
Next steps: immediately pull over and turn your engine off. The coolant is way too hot to check immediately, but make sure open the hood and visually check for signs of coolant leaks around the hoses and radiator while you wait for the coolant to cool. You can also visually check the coolant level in the reservoir. Seek the help of a professional or roadside assistance if you don’t know what to do next, as removing the radiator cap before the engine cools can cause severe burns as the overheated coolant can spray everywhere.
What it means: at least one of your tires is severely underinflated.
Next steps: pull over as soon as you can in a safe place, then check the air pressure of all your tires. If your tires still have enough air to drive, then go to the nearest air filler, such as a gas station, and fill up your underinflated tires. If the warning light comes on again within a few days, then seek the help of a professional to either fix the leak in your tire or replace the tire completely.
What it means: your windshield washer fluid is low.
Next steps: open the hood and re-fill your washer fluid. Seek professional help if you suspect a leak in your washer fluid tank.
