How to Maximize MPG on Your Road Trip

Road trips are an American classic. However, rising gas prices can put a burden on your wallet. Here are a few easy tips to help you save money on your next trip.

We have all heard that driving fast on the freeway lowers your mpg. According to consumer reports, we now have an idea of how much money we are losing by driving fast: you can lose up to 14 mpg.

If you drive 75 mph instead of 55 mph, you waste 1.5 to 2 gallons of gas. That’s $5-$7 of wasted money. Add that up for an entire road trip and that is a lot of wasted money. If money is an issue during your next road trip, consider slowing down. Slower speeds will also minimize your chances of getting in an accident, making for a cheaper and safer trip.

The following is a chart of the findings from Consumer Reports.
